MEMBERS' CODE OF ETHICS and PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
Introduction:
Members of the National Register of Reflexologists (Ireland) are expected to always observe all parts of this Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and to conduct themselves in such a manner as to uphold and maintain the highest professional standards of Reflexology.
This Code governs the attitude and behaviour of the reflexologist towards clients, the general public, and fellow reflexologists, and will also form the basis for discussion and discipline in the event of any complaint against a member.
Members must recognise that the primary obligation is towards the client, and at all times must practise their skills to the best of their ability for the benefit of the client. The comfort and welfare, culture and customs, values and spiritual beliefs of the client must always have priority over any other consideration.
- Accurate and detailed records of treatment must be kept, but any knowledge acquired in a professional capacity during consultation or during treatment may not be divulged to a third party without the client's consent, except where required by law.
- Members must not make medical diagnoses or use implements.
- Aromatherapy oils may not be used before or during a reflexology treatment.
- No unqualified advice should be given.
- No claim should be made to have effected a cure.
- Members must present a united front to the public and should not imply criticism of colleagues either in writing or verbally, in the presence of clients or of the general public.
- Members' premises and clinics should be maintained in a condition that reflects credit on the profession of Reflexology.
- A member has the right to refuse treatment provided such refusal is given in a professional manner.
- Members have a responsibility to continue their personal and professional development by updating their training and skills, with the Registry's CPD accredited post diploma programme.
- A member who practises another therapy in conjunction with reflexology must make it clear to the client that such secondary therapy is not part of the reflexology treatment.
- A practising member must have full malpractice and public liability insurance cover.
- When giving treatment to a person under sixteen years of age, or a vulnerable person, it is necessary to seek prior permission (consent form) from a parent or guardian, and also to request the presence of a third party on whose integrity the reflexologist can rely.
- A member wishing to teach Reflexology must have a minimum of five years postgraduate clinical experience. Assistants must have a minimum of three years postgraduate experience and must themselves be registered members of the National Register of Reflexologists (Ireland).
- A 'Complaints Procedure' is available to members, students, and clients, and anyone wishing to avail of that service should bring the matter to the attention of the Registrar in writing, for it to be placed before the N.R.R.I. Executive Committee for their consideration.
Any proposed addition, deletion, or amendment to this Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct will be considered by the N.R.R.I. Council whose final decision will be notified to members.

ACCREDITED SCHOOL CODE OF ETHICS
The NRRI Members’ Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct is fundamental to the conduct of accredited school principals and staff and must be observed by them at all times in their personal capacities and in their relationship to the students, in their conduct of diploma courses and CPD courses, and in their relationships with the NRRI and other accredited schools: Likewise, schools must ensure the observance of the NRRI Students’ Code of Ethics and Practice by their students.
The primary obligation is towards the students with due consideration for individual cultures and religious beliefs.
-
- Accredited schools must conduct all aspects of their business in compliance with the NRRI Quality Assurance Document and its appendices, which form the basis of their accreditation, and any subsequent additions or amendments thereto.
- Accredited schools are required to work in harmony and co-operation with the NRRI and with each other in the promotion of reflexology as a unique and specialised complementary therapy. Representation at the NRRI annual Schools’ meetings is an important factor in this process.
- Accredited schools must present a united front to their students and to the general public and must not publicly imply criticism of other schools or their personnel either in writing or verbally.
- Complaints or grievances relative to a school principal and/or staff member and/or the conduct of a course must be referred to the NRRI for mediation, and for disciplinary action when necessary. Failure on the part of the school to co-operate in the mediation process will be grounds for suspension of accreditation.
- Premises used by schools for diploma and cpd courses must provide an environment that is conducive to training and learning, and that reflects credit on the profession of reflexology.
- Any proposed addition, deletion, or amendment to this Code shall be considered by the NRRI Advisory Council whose decisions shall be final.
Any proposed addition, deletion, or amendment to this Code of Ethics will be considered by the N.R.R.I. Council whose final decision will be notified to members.

STUDENT MEMBERS' CODE OF ETHICS
Introduction:
Only students attending diploma courses in reflexology at schools accredited by the National Register of Reflexologists (Ireland) - hereinafter referred to as the NRRI - over eighteen years of age and having paid the current membership fee, are eligible for NRRI student membership.
Student membership is valid for the period of the course which is current at the time of joining.
This Code of Ethics has been executed to regulate the attitude and conduct of student members towards clients, the general public and fellow reflexologists, to uphold the highest professional standards of practice, and to provide a basis for discussion in the resolution of complaints.
Student members must present a united front to the public and should not imply criticism of colleagues either in writing or verbally, in the presence of clients or of the general public.
1. Acceptance and observation of this Code of Ethics is a condition of membership.
- Student members must recognise that as reflexologists their primary obligation is towards the client and must practise their skills to the best of their ability for the benefit of the client. The comfort and welfare, culture and customs, values and spiritual beliefs of the client must always be given appropriate priority. Reflexologists must behave with integrity, courtesy and discretion. Their attitude must be competent and sympathetic, hopeful and positive, thus encouraging an up-lift in the patient's mental outlook and belief in a gradual progression towards wholeness.
- Student members must restrict their extra-mural practice of reflexology to close family and friends, and to the regulatory requirements of Case Histories, at all times in close consultation with their tutors.
- Student members must take guidance from their tutors regarding contra-indications for reflexology treatment.
- When giving treatment to a person under eighteen years of age it is advisable to seek prior permission from a parent or guardian, and also to request the presence of a third party on whose integrity the reflexologist can rely.
- A member who is qualified to practise another therapy in conjunction with reflexology may do so only with the prior agreement of both the school tutor and the client, and must make it clear to the client that such secondary therapy is not part of the reflexology treatment. Aromatherapy oils may not be used before or during a reflexology treatment.
- Accurate and detailed records of treatment must be kept, but any knowledge acquired in a professional capacity during consultation or during the treatment may not be divulged to a third party without the client's consent, other than to the student's tutor in the regular course of training and except when required by law.
- Medical diagnoses must not be made or implied. The reflexologist may offer an attempt to achieve a certain measure of healing and homeostasis, but recovery must never be promised, and no claim should be made to have effected a cure.
- No unqualified advice should be given and implements must not be used.
- A "Complaints Procedure" is available to students and clients, and anyone wishing to avail of that service should bring the matter to the attention of the Registrar in writing, for it to be placed before the NRRI Executive Committee for their consideration.
Any proposed addition, deletion, or amendment to this Code of Ethics will be considered by the N.R.R.I. Council whose final decision will be notified to members.
